Manual Lymphatic Drainage
is the recognised style of massage which is used primarily to promote optimal functioning of the lymphatic vessels and facilitates the removal of excess fluid in common conditions such as oedema and post surgery swelling, to remove excess tissue congestion. Manual lymphatic drainage is also a beneficial therapy for
treating lymphoedema; ultimately it aims to clear blockages so that excess fluids may be removed from the affected areas - MLD also aims to prevent
fluids building up again.
MLD is a gentle, flowing, ryhthmic massage which is extremely relaxing and the majority of people will become very relaxed due to the slow rhythmic motions which stimulate the movement of lymph through the lymph vessels. From a well-being aspect it can be applied to a wide range of
physical conditions to great effect. Therefore, it can be applied as a stand-alone treatment, or can be incorporated into body massage techniques.
MLD may be used for problems such as oedema, skin disorders, headache, sinus congestion, sprains and aches, pre and post surgery. Cancer and post surgery patients may benefit from MLD, however it will be necessary to provide written permission from your specialist prior to treatment.
